What This Quiz Measures

Savings Rate

The single most important factor in reaching FIRE. A 50%+ savings rate can cut your timeline from 30 years to under 15.

Emergency Fund

Your financial safety net. Without one, a single unexpected expense can derail years of progress.

Debt Status

High-interest debt is the enemy of compounding. Every dollar of credit card interest is a dollar not growing in your portfolio.

Investment Strategy

How you invest matters as much as how much you save. Low-cost index funds outperform most active strategies over time.

FIRE Number

Your financial independence target. Without knowing your number, you're driving without a destination.

Housing Costs

Housing is most people's largest expense. Getting it below 25% of income can shave years off your FIRE timeline.

Income Diversification

Multiple income streams reduce risk and accelerate savings. Even a small side income can add years of compounding.

Healthcare Planning

The #1 concern for early retirees. Having a plan for ACA coverage, health sharing, or self-funding is essential.

What to Do After the Quiz

1

Focus on your weakest category

Your results highlight exactly where to start. A 0 in savings rate matters more than optimizing an area where you already score 3.

2

Use the recommended tools

Each recommendation is matched to your lowest-scoring dimensions. Run the numbers for your specific situation.

3

Set a 90-day goal

Pick one dimension and commit to improving it by one point. Increase savings by 5%, build 1 more month of emergency fund, or open an investment account.

4

Retake in 6 months

Track your progress over time. A 3-point improvement in 6 months means you're on an excellent trajectory.

THE MATH

Improving your savings rate from 15% to 30% can cut your time to FIRE from 40+ years to under 25 years. One dimension improvement can mean a decade of freedom.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does this FIRE Readiness Quiz measure?

The quiz scores you across 8 key dimensions of financial independence: savings rate, emergency fund, debt status, investment strategy, FIRE number knowledge, housing cost efficiency, income diversification, and healthcare planning. Each dimension is scored 0-3, giving a total possible score of 24.

What is a good FIRE Readiness score?

Scores of 19-24 indicate you're FIRE Ready — strong across most dimensions. 13-18 means you're On Track and ahead of most people. 7-12 means you're Building Momentum with a solid foundation. Below 7 means you're Starting Out, which is completely normal — everyone begins somewhere.

How is the FIRE Readiness score calculated?

Each of the 8 questions has 4 answer choices scored 0-3. A score of 0 means that dimension needs significant work, while 3 means you're excelling. Your total score (0-24) determines your overall tier. The breakdown shows exactly where to focus your efforts.

What should I do after taking the quiz?

The quiz provides 3 personalized tool recommendations based on your weakest areas. If your savings rate scored low, you'll get directed to the Savings Rate Calculator. If you don't know your FIRE number, you'll see the FIRE Number Calculator. Focus on improving your lowest-scoring categories first.

How often should I retake the FIRE Readiness Quiz?

We recommend retaking the quiz every 6-12 months to track your progress. As you pay off debt, increase savings, diversify income, and plan for healthcare, your score should naturally improve. It's a useful benchmark for measuring how your financial independence preparation evolves.
